Pardoning Trump would be bad, mmkay?

I read recently that both Republican candidates Nikki Haley and Ron Desantis pledged to pardon Trump for any crimes he’s convicted of if they become President. This pledge may be good primary politics, but it’s corrosive to the rule of law.

If Trump is convicted of crimes associated with Jan 6 or his gross mishandling of classified documents, that sends a message that inciting violent insurrection or stealing national secrets is acceptable.

There are two state prosecutions, one in New York (misusing election money to pay off Stormy Daniels) and one in Georgia (interference with the 2020 election) that could snare Trump independently of the federal charges. I suspect the former is a long shot, but the latter should be pretty much a slam dunk given Trump’s actions.

And there’s not a thing the President can do to pardon state convictions.
